Hourglass, announces headline partnership to launch Safer Ageing Week
Hourglass, the only charity in the UK dedicated to ending the abuse and neglect of older people, has joined forces with financial advisor company, Just Group, to become their nominated charity partner for the next two years. The charity sees this as a vital partnership and an exciting development to launch Safer Ageing Week.
Research commissioned by Hourglass revealed the shocking data that 2.7 million people were affected by elder abuse in the UK, yet it’s abuse that is rarely discussed. The unique Hourglass 24/7 helpline, has also seen a significant increase in calls from those affected by abuse and neglect, with an increase of over 90% during August 2022 alone.
However, despite this obvious need, the charity receives very little funding from the Government, something the charity are campaigning to change. Hourglass received less than £300k in the past two years compared to £14m for similarly vital child abuse charities and £5m for animal abuse. As the economic crisis takes hold and as abuse numbers rise, Hourglass welcomes this partnership with Just Group.
Calls to the helpline have seen an increase of 67% this year relating to financial abuse. The majority is perpetrated by family members or trusted friends stealing from older people or misusing LPA (lasting power of attorney). The partnership with Just Group will help raise awareness of this type of abuse, whilst tapping into their financial expertise and allow the charity to continue to educate people on spotting the signs of economic abuse.
Activities planned for the next 24 months, are collaborative webinars, fundraising activities and speaking with Just Group staff around financial abuse training.
Richard Robinson, CEO of Hourglass said:
“Tackling the abuse of older people will take collaborations across the private, public and third sector and this partnership with Just Group is an excellent example. We are delighted to be working with this forward-thinking company and look forward to developing a close relationship with the team. It is an ideal way of launching Safer Ageing Week and we are excited by the year ahead.”
